GET TO KNOW THE MAIN STREET GARDNERVILLE COMMUNITY
HISTORY OF GARDNERVILLE
Welcome to Gardnerville, Nevada! We are delighted you have decided to locate your new business on Main Street Gardnerville.
Founded in 1879, Gardnerville boasts a rich cultural heritage. Its location along the route to the Esmeralda Mining District and Bodie—a site of a significant gold strike in 1878—turned Gardnerville into a vital feed stop for 24-horse freight teams traveling between Carson City and the mining camps. Immigrants from Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, China, and Britain greatly influenced the town’s growth.
In its early years, Gardnerville saw little change. However, by 1885, the town expanded as the local farming industry began to flourish. More hotels, shops, and saloons appeared along Main Street, and in 1898, Spanish and French Basque shepherds arrived, bringing around 13,000 sheep to Carson Valley. Thanks to the vision of our early entrepreneurs, by 1899, Gardnerville had established itself as a commercial hub and a center of community life in the valley.
